HSE Apprentice, Birchwood
Why choose an apprenticeship?
I chose an apprenticeship as I think they are a brilliant way into the field you would like to get into and ideal for achieving relevant learning and experience for a job. No matter how much bookwork you complete, companies will always look for experience and want you to hit the ground running, so working, while learning new skills, was the route I wanted to take.
I’m passionate about trying my hardest, to be the best person I can be, both for myself and Integral. I am proud of the person I am becoming. I am taking more time to assess situations, I’m asking more questions and even the way I speak to people has changed. I didn’t do the greatest in school, but things can always turn around if you put in the effort and believe you can do it. Hopefully my apprenticeship and the training I receive from Integral will take me to the top. I plan to try to progress my career and in future become a HSE Director and who knows where I can go from there.
Every day is different
I enjoy the fact that each day is different, I’m either off on a new site every week, seeing how they operate comparative to other sites, or I’m on a training course. I’m very rarely based in the office. Just walking around site with different people, you learn so much about health and safety and the set-ups of different sites and even the people who work on them.
I only began my S.H.E Level 3 apprenticeship training in January, and have completed my first course. I’ve been trying to take in as much information as possible and have learned more about how to deliver presentations and how to use excel sheets to a higher standard than before.
As I progress, my work will develop into keeping everyone on and around our sites and even offices, safe and healthy. It is critical to Integral’s line of work which involves mechanical and electrical engineering and often construction, as otherwise not only could we lose contracts, but lives. Without Health & Safety, our staff, our clients and the general public would be at risk, so I look forward to playing a larger role in future, in keeping them safe.
